ARAB AFFAIRS: SPECIAL “IS SARAH PALIN AUDITIONING FOR A ROLE IN ARAB POLITICS?” EDITION

Asef Shawkat out as intel head in Syria

TBE has heard this old chestnut before, so we’re adopting a wait-and-see attitude with regard to its veracity. Shawkat is Bashar’s sister Bushra’s husband. There is an apocryphal story that Hafez considered Bushra his cleverest child but didn’t install her for gender-related reasons. Of course careful observers can’t discount the possibility that Bashar is taking lessons from Sarah Palin and Asef’s demotion is troopergate writ large, actually related to marital turmoil between him and Bushra.

Boy king names even boyier crown prince

Bucking the trend of rejecting familial succession in the Arab world, Jordan’s King Abdullah has named his 15-year-old son, Hussein, crown prince. The move comes five years after Abdullah stripped his brother Hamza of the title during a family feud.

Sarah Palin is basically the Muammar al-Qaddafi of US politics

TBE hereby predicts her upcoming autobiography will become the Green Book for a new generation of conservative Christians.

Drug Thugs Get No Gov Love in Lebanon

All TBE can say is we admire the drug families’ message discipline: “Mr Jafaar repeats a refrain commonly heard during more than a dozen meetings The National held with current and former drug traffickers in the Beqaa Valley and Beirut. “I assure you that government officials bring in the cocaine and take out the hashish. The growers are the poorest people involved.””

  1. I think you mean: “Jordan’s King Abdullah …” not “Jordan’s King Hussein …”
