No undue disrespect intended to Azerbaijan but… TBE doesn’t know what to make of this one. It’s so ridiculous that we’re sure even our most humorless readers can think of their own snide asides.
From page 5 of yesterday’s al-Ahram:
Israel Requests that Azerbaijan Mediate with Syria Instead of Turkey
Israel has withdrawn its confidence in Turkey’s ability to mediate indirect peace talks with Syria and instead wants Azerbaijan to mediate. Turkish newspaper Aksham reported yesterday that during a recent visit to Azerbaijan Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu asked Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev to take a role in facilitating talks with Syria in the coming stages. The newspaper attributed Israel’s decision to the argument that occurred between Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan and Israeli President Shimon Peres at the Davos Forum in Switzerland last January, during Israel’s attack on Gaza. The newspaper pointed out that convening the new round of talks in Baku would reflect poorly on Turkey’s role as a mediator in the Middle East.
Unsurprisingly, an article in today’s al-Ahram (p. 5) states that Syria has rejected Israel’s “generous offer.”
