TBE and Adams Morgan go back many years, and since we’ve been reunited like Peaches & Herb, we decided to highlight a few of our favorite dishes in the neighborhood as part of our Omnibus Summer Guide #4080.
La Granja de Oro:
Back in the olden days, not quite back when Cube was rollin wit Lorenzo in a Benzo but a long time ago nonetheless, La Granja de Oro was located in the old bank building at the corner of 18th and Columbia, which now houses a new bank called BB&T unrelated to the bank that originally occupied the space. Back then La Granja de Oro used to be a destination restaurant for us. It still is, to the extent that we eat there every time we return to DC. The chicken is sometimes a little dry, but is slathered in enough cheese and green sauce to render this anhydrous fowl’s desiccation a non-issue. Also it is huge, one of the few sandwiches TBE happily eats without french fries or thinking, “I wish I had some french fries right now.”
Super Tacos and Bakery:
This place used to have a different name but the same location. Unfortunately TBE doesn’t remember the old name, most likely because the restaurant sits next to another restaurant that goes by the name “O’Tasty’s,” which is one of the best restaurant names in DC, even if we would never eat there due to a generalized and possibly misguided distrust of the Chinese food/fried chicken genre of restaurants. For all our readers who are chefs, you could probably gain instant renown by making a(n) haute version of this concept, preferably located in a recently gentrified area where such restaurants were once common.
At any rate, TBE always orders the crispy chicken tacos from Super Tacos and Bakery, which we then slather with three different kinds of salsa. The desserts here are hit-or-miss, depending on how fresh they are. Sometimes when the mil hojas (the Mexican version of mille feuille, which when being aggressively ignorant we call milly foo-illy (rhymes with Milli Vanilli) and when being aggressively pompous call Against the Day or The Brothers Karamazov and when being aggressively Arabic call الف صفحة… و صفحة) is fresh it is divine, but other times it’s soggy. As an aside, we recently learned that some people prefer this particular dessert soggy, so maybe someone can make an IPhone app that tracks the humidity of Super Tacos’ mil hojas, then the soggies can get it at peak sogginess and the dryies at its peak dryness.
A testament to TBE’s love of Mixtec’s steak fajita nachos is that we once witnessed a mouse running across the floor and still we return. Also the queso fundido is delicious and we always order it but sometimes it gives us a stomachache.
The Popeye’s in Adams Morgan is closed along with the other stores on that little strip next to Safeway. We’re not sure if Safeway is expanding or some other behemoth of retail will be taking the place once occupied by America’s best fast food fried chicken chain. Although TBE is a stalwart supporter of Popeye’s, we aren’t sorry to see this particular outlet close. We once sauntered past round about midnight, after the restaurant had already closed, and saw some rats running around playing inside the restaurant. Until that moment we had never seen rats having fun but they demonstrated a certain joie de vivre that we found appalling, and thenceforth vowed never to return. Instead we go to the one in Tenleytown.
TBE does not like the fact that Tryst serves their coffee in giant cups, and we’re agnostic on animal crackers. And their quiche lorraine is unparalleled in the annals of quichedom, even if the size of the piece they serve seems to grow smaller every year.
